Nebo School District has released information regarding the potential closure of Cherry Creek Elementary, citing a long-term decline in student enrollment in the neighborhood as the primary reason for consideration. The district stated it is committed to transparency and gathering community input throughout this process.
If the Board of Education decides to close the school, the change would occur in May 202, with new school boundaries beginning in August 2027. No changes are planned for the 2026-2027 school year.
The district will conduct a Boundary Realignment Study starting in late 2026. This process includes public hearings scheduled for January 2027 to allow parents to provide input on new attendance maps. If Cherry Creek closes, students would likely be assigned to neighboring schools such as Brookside, Art City, or Sage Creek, which currently have available capacity.
Regarding staff, all teachers and staff will remain employed by the Nebo School District. The district intends to consider their input regarding preferred locations and positions.
Springville City has expressed interest in purchasing the Cherry Creek property if the closure is approved. The city intends to use the site as a community hub, preserving the historic gymnasium and supporting the Springville Art Museum to create a space for art, education, and recreation.
The district noted that closing the school would result in cost savings related to facility expenses such as utilities, maintenance, repairs, and certain operational staff. While Title I preschool options cannot be guaranteed until boundaries are finalized, it is anticipated that these services and funds would be relocated to another area school.
