The hikers had reached the summit when the storm moved into the area. Sept. Sept. Search and rescue personnel and other responding agencies provided medical assistance and worked to evacuate those affected. The National Weather Service recommends hikers move away from peaks, ridgelines and other elevated areas when thunder is heard and seek substantial shelter when possible.
