Provo City School District Superintendent Dau released a community update highlighting recent achievements and upcoming district activities. The update included recognitions for local educators and PTA members, as well as information on new state legislation affecting schools.
The Franklin Elementary PTA was recognized for winning the Jan Harp Domene Diversity and Inclusion Award, making them the first PTA in Utah to receive the honor. The award included a $1,000 prize for their efforts in community participation and student-centered initiatives.
Lakeview Elementary art teacher Elicia Gray was also honored at the State Teacher of the Year banquet. Additionally, Superintendent Dau visited Centennial Middle School to meet with various classes and staff members.
The district announced a board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, featuring a study session at 4 p.m. and a business meeting at 7 p.m. Agenda items include a Shoreline travel request to Boston, construction and site updates for Timpview and Dixon, and discussions regarding a potential elementary school name at the Dixon site. The board will also discuss land annexation near Canyon Crest, DLI, LEA-specific licenses, a sex education committee, and Timpview marching band fees.
New legislation prohibits the distribution of specific food items containing certain prohibited additives by schools and teachers during the school day. While this restriction applies to items provided by the school or teachers, it does not prevent parents from bringing items like cupcakes for parties. Parents may submit permission forms to teachers via the district's provided links.
Regarding the Pledge of Allegiance, students may opt out through a written request from a parent to the school principal. The district noted that students who do not participate are expected to remain respectful of others' choices.
New Utah state laws also require digital literacy training for all teachers and students. The district will determine how to deliver this curriculum, which focuses on Chromebook usage and online safety.
Upcoming events include a Parent Resource Night at Centennial Middle School on Wednesday, September 16, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. On the same day, the district foundation will host a Links for Kids fundraising golf tournament. Sponsorships for the tournament require a $1,500 donation, which supports teacher mini-grants for literacy, STEM, math, and the arts, as well as community support programs.
