The City of St. George was scheduled to host Patriot Day: Remembering 9/11 at Historic Town Square. According to a notice from the city, the event was intended to honor those who perished in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and recognize local first responders.
The event was scheduled for Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. and featured a keynote address from 9/11 survivor Victor Guzman, whose office was located on the 85th floor of the first tower struck in the attacks. The program was to include a bell tribute from the St. George Fire Department, children’s choirs, a bagpiper, and a flag retirement ceremony conducted by the Sons of the American Legion and United We Pledge.
Additional activities scheduled for the observance included a Field of Heroes display of 343 American flags on the Town Square lawn from Sept. 8 to 12. Children's activities such as patriotic face painting and free carousel rides were also planned. Additionally, the St. George Fire Department was scheduled to host a stair climbing event at Tech Ridge from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. to honor the 343 New York City firefighters and all victims of the attacks.
The Patriot Day observance was made possible with assistance from several community sponsors, including Swenson & Shelley Injury Attorneys, United We Pledge, The Advenire, American Legion Post 142, Dixie High School Air Force JROTC, Barney McKenna Olmstead, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Exchange Club of St. George, and Sons of the American Revolution.
