An 87-year-old Washington Terrace man has died after suffering severe burns during the Adams Fire on Monday. The victim was identified as Cecil "Ted" Burrell, 87, of Washington Terrace.
According to a Weber County Sheriff's Office news release, the fire was reported at approximately 11:45 a.m. near Interstate 84 and Adams Avenue Parkway. Fueled by wind and dry vegetation, the blaze spread rapidly toward homes in the 5700 South area.
Multiple fire departments and law enforcement agencies responded to the scene as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. While deputies and officers conducted door-to-door evacuations on the south end of the city, responders learned one resident was unaccounted for. Deputies located the residence surrounded by heavy smoke and ash, along with a trailer on fire.
Burrell was found with severe burns inside the home. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries, according to the sheriff's office.
Evacuation orders remained in effect until about 5:30 p.m. Monday, when residents were permitted to return to their homes. The Utah State Fire Marshal’s Office is currently investigating the cause of the fire. In a news release, the Weber County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to Burrell’s family and friends and expressed thanks to the responding agencies.
