The Convention Facilities Advisory Board met on August 20, 2026, to discuss operational assessments and reconstruction planning for regional convention facilities. According to meeting minutes, the board reviewed updates regarding the Salt Palace Convention Center and the Mountain America Expo Center.
The Salt Palace Convention Center received an 88% score in a preliminary operational assessment covering cleanliness, safety, maintenance, and operational standards. Officials noted that the team is reviewing and disputing certain findings before the score is finalized. Regarding the Salt Palace reconstruction, the project is currently in the conceptual design phase. Current concepts aim to maintain sellable square footage while shifting some exhibit space to ballroom space, including a new rooftop ballroom. The west-side halls are scheduled to close beginning February 16, 2027, with the remaining facility targeted to close after the final September 2027 event. Construction is projected to last approximately 36 to 39 months, with a goal of hosting events in the reconstructed facility in Q1 2031.
Efforts are underway to retain and relocate business during the Salt Palace reconstruction period. The team is working with partners to move or adapt several events at the Mountain America Expo Center, including USA Volleyball, Varsity Spirit, FanX, Western Hunt Expo, Utah Dental Association, and Associated Food Stores. Additionally, the Mountain America Expo Center is pursuing LEED Operations and Maintenance and Cleaning Industry Management Standard certifications.
Financial reviews indicated that the Salt Palace continues to exceed budget expectations due to strong food and beverage activity and event revenue, while expenses remain below budget. The Mountain America Expo Center is performing generally as expected, with Q4 activity forecasted to support annual budget targets.
The board also discussed a culture survey involving 109 employees through a partnership with Fired Up Culture. Leadership is expected to review those results on September 15 to identify priorities and actions. Additionally, a customer service committee has been reestablished across both venues to review guest touchpoints and feedback.
