Lehi High School overcame mistakes to defeat American Fork 20-19 in a rivalry contest on Friday, Oct. 2, according to a Lehi Free Press report. The victory, which was not decided until the final minute, took place in American Fork.
Cam Bryce served as the workhorse for the Pioneers, recording 23 carries for 110 yards and 18 yards receiving along with two touchdowns. Junior running back Bryce scored his first touchdown 57 seconds into the second quarter following a drive that included a 15-yard gain and a screen pass to Zeke Clements. He added a second 1-yard touchdown later in the fourth quarter to give Lehi a 14-13 lead.
Briggs Jensen contributed heavily to the comeback, including a touchdown pass to Clements in the final minute to secure the 20-19 lead. Senior Cam Wren also provided significant yardage, totaling 150 yards on three kickoff returns and three receptions.
The American Fork Cavemen held the lead at several points, including a 10-7 advantage at halftime and a 19-14 lead with 5:21 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Cavemen's scoring included a 22-yard field goal in the first period and a touchdown via a spectacular end zone catch.
Defensively, Lehi's Porter Hobbs recorded an interception and six tackles, while Paul Unga also recorded an interception and seven tackles. Senior linebacker Colt Kelley led the team with nine combined tackles. American Fork's defense included contributions from linebacker Brody Downs and defensive back Li'i Unga.
Coach Andy Hatfield noted that Lehi had not won at American Fork in more than a decade. He stated that while the team made mistakes, they showed heart and competitiveness against a well-coached opponent. Lehi currently sits tied with American Fork and Corner Canyon for second place in Region 3 at 1-1.
The Pioneers will host Lone Peak for Senior Night on Thursday, Oct. 8, with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Their league season concludes with a trip to Corner Canyon on Wednesday, Oct. 14, also scheduled for 7 p.m.
