Salt Lake City has unveiled a concept plan, drafted in coordination with property owners and adjacent businesses, for the future of 500 West, an important north-south corridor connecting the 9-Line to Salt Lake City Intermodal Hub, as well as the North Temple FrontRunner Station and Folsom Trail. The City is seeking public input through an online survey, as it looks at how to address aging infrastructure, improve safety and connectivity, and prepare 500 West for continued growth.
Known as the “500 West Corridor Improvement and Connectivity Plan,” the project considers the long-term needs of the street, including portions where sidewalks and other pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure are incomplete or inadequate.
The project addresses:
Street and utility infrastructure, including aging infrastructure and planned reconstruction
Transportation safety for people walking, biking, driving, and taking transit
Walking and biking connections to the 9-Line, Folsom Trail, North Temple, downtown, and surrounding neighborhoods
Urban heat and shade, including expanded tree canopy and comfortable places for people to walk and gather
Stormwater and flood management
Parking and access
Long-term growth and development along the corridor
“Missing sidewalks, inadequate storm drains, and failing asphalt are the reality on 500 West today,” said Blake Thomas, senior advisor on real estate and capital projects for the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office. “With dozens of local businesses here and nearly 3,000 housing units that have been completed, are under construction, or are in the pipeline, we can’t afford to delay these improvements any longer.”
500 West connects several important downtown destinations and is becoming increasingly important as the surrounding area grows. The Granary District section of 500 West, between 900 South and 600 South, will be prioritized for improvements because of its rapid growth, aging infrastructure, and significant need for transportation and public realm improvements.
The concept plan, informed by previous community workshops, includes continuous and improved pedestrian connections, a shaded bike lane, expanded tree canopy and vegetation, parking, and other improvements intended to make the corridor safer and more comfortable.
Through the online survey, community members can review the concept and provide feedback to shape the future of 500 West, including what amenities they would like to see, like seating, gathering areas, recreation, and public art.
