The University of Utah is scheduled to close its Sandy Center on Jan. 1, 2027, according to a report published August 26. The closure comes as the university implements a state-directed budget restructuring plan.
The university announced the decision on Aug. 21, noting that students currently enrolled in the fall 2026 term will be able to complete all listed classes at the facility.
Approximately 660 students are taking courses at the Sandy Center this semester. Of those, 33 students rely on the center for all of their current coursework, according to the university and The Salt Lake Tribune.
Starting in spring 2027, courses previously held in Sandy may be offered at the main Salt Lake City campus, online, or through other arrangements determined by individual programs. University staff are working with academic colleges, departments, and advising offices to help students transition and protect their progress toward graduation.
The closure is part of the university's response to HB 265, a 2025 law that established a higher education strategic reinvestment process. This measure requires Utah's public institutions to move money from existing operations into approved priorities, including programs connected to workforce needs and student demand. The university's plan involves redirecting approximately $19.6 million over a three-year period.
Under the legislation, participating institutions initially faced a 10% reduction in appropriations. These funds can be restored as schools meet specific reinvestment benchmarks: 30% in fiscal year 2026, 70% in fiscal year 2027, and 100% in fiscal year 2028.
University leaders stated the Sandy Center's operating model includes building and support costs that are separate from those at the main campus. They also noted that many courses offered at the site are available through other university formats.
The center has served students in Sandy for more than two decades, having used its current location since 2015. While in-person operations at the facility will end, some programs are expected to continue elsewhere. According to KSL, Continuing Education programs, youth offerings, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute classes are expected to remain available through other locations.
The institution is currently examining how to organize academic services throughout Salt Lake County while implementing the broader budget plan. Officials stated that further transition details will be posted as planning progresses.
