A new production of The Scarlet Pimpernel is bringing action, adventure, and romance to The Ruth in Pleasant Grove. Based on the classic novel by Baroness Orczy, this musical features music by Frank Wildhorn with book and lyrics by Nan Knighton.
Directed by David Morgan, the production utilizes vibrant designs and stunning vocals to bring the story of the French Revolution to life.
The musical tells the story of English nobleman Sir Percy Blakeney, who creates the alter-ego The Scarlet Pimpernel to rescue aristocrats from the French guillotine. The plot involves a web of lies as Blakeney's wife, Marguerite St. Just, is suspected of being a spy working with Citizen Chauvelin.
The production features fast pacing and significant design elements. Lighting designer Ryan Fallis uses bold images, color, and geometric shapes to emphasize character themes, while Lauri Baird provides large and bountiful costume designs, particularly for the character Marguerite.
Performances include Scott Hendrickson as Sir Percy Blakeney, noted for his ability to balance dramatic intensity with comedic buoyancy. Malia Morley portrays Marguerite with an impeccable French accent, supported by dialect coach Steven Rimke. Bronson Dameron performs as the determined Citizen Chauvelin, appearing in a detailed swordfight choreographed by Spencer Hohl.
