A reported explosion sparked a fire at a Millcreek apartment complex on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Unified Fire Authority. The incident prompted evacuations but resulted in no reported injuries, according to a report published August 25.
Unified Fire Authority spokesman Ricardo Rivera stated that firefighters were dispatched around 3:15 p.m. after receiving reports of an explosion inside an apartment at the Stonehedge Apartments on Stonehedge Drive. Crews investigating the scene found smoke and a small fire coming from one of the rooms and began a fire attack. Additional UFA units and crews from South Salt Lake responded to the scene.
Rivera noted that no one was inside the apartment when the explosion and fire occurred. No smoke inhalation or injuries were reported, and all firefighters at the scene were safe and accounted for. While the fire was contained to one unit, approximately six apartments remained evacuated late Tuesday afternoon while investigators examined the unit where the fire originated. Residents of the other apartments were expected to be allowed to return.
Rivera observed significant cosmetic damage inside the affected apartment, though he could not confirm if the blast caused structural damage. He stated that the cause of the explosion and fire remains under investigation. Utilities were only affected at the apartment complex. Unified Police and utility crews also assisted at the scene.
