Provo has established a broad network of affordable housing options to serve various resident needs, according to a statement released August 27. The city maintains a significant portion of the affordable housing available in Utah County through various programs and partnerships.
The Provo Housing Authority manages more than 500 affordable units for seniors, individuals with disabilities, families, survivors of domestic violence, and people experiencing homelessness. These properties offer rents at or below fair market rents set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Additionally, the authority administers the Housing Choice Voucher Program, which provides rental assistance to 985 families and individuals in privately owned homes.
Beyond city-managed properties, Provo has over 600 Low-Income Housing Tax Credit units, transitional housing, and other resources provided by community partners. The city's approach addresses diverse needs, including rental assistance, publicly owned housing, apartment communities, and affordable homeownership opportunities.
The Delta Vista project is an example of efforts to expand workforce homeownership. This community will include 68 homes, with 34 reserved for qualifying Provo City employees and 34 sold at market rates. A community land trust will be used to reduce purchase costs and preserve affordability for future buyers.
Councilmember Rachel Whipple stated that affordable housing is essential to ensuring Provo remains a welcoming community for residents of all backgrounds. She noted that housing options for families, seniors, students, and workers are necessary as the city grows.
Council Vice Chair Craig Christensen noted that maintaining housing options is increasingly important as Provo's population continues to grow. He stated that the existing affordable housing provides a strong foundation for the city's future planning.
