The Minersville Water System issued a notice on August 4, 2026, informing residents that certain water service lines have been identified as having unknown material. This means the pipes could be made of lead.
A service line is an underground pipe that carries water from the water main into a home or building. The water system is typically responsible for the section from the main to the property line, while the property owner is responsible for the section from the property line onward.
Because the material of the service line is unknown on one or both sides, officials suggest residents take steps to identify the material. If a service line is found to contain lead, the Minersville Water System will contact the resident to discuss replacement options.

Exposure to lead in drinking water can cause serious health effects across all age groups. Infants and children may experience decreases in IQ and attention span, as well as new or exacerbated learning and behavior problems. Children exposed to lead before or during pregnancy face increased risks of adverse health effects. Adults may face increased risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, or kidney and nervous system problems.
To reduce lead exposure, residents can let water run for three to five minutes before using it for cooking or drinking if it has not been used in over six hours. It is noted that boiling water does not remove lead.
Other mitigation steps include using cold water for drinking and food preparation, as hot water releases more lead from pipes, and frequently cleaning faucet screens and aerators. Residents may also use certified lead-removing water filters or bottled water, and should use only certified lead-free materials for plumbing during building or remodeling projects.
