The Iron County Commission met on August 24, 2026, to address several administrative and legislative matters, including mid-year budget adjustments and a denied annexation request, according to meeting minutes published September 14.
During the meeting, the commission approved Ordinance 2026-19, which changes a 20-acre property at 3831 W 4000 North in Cedar City from Rural Agriculture 20 to Residential 1. The commission also passed Resolution 2026-5, authorizing mid-year budget adjustments for various departments including the Balance Fund, Emergency Management, and the Sheriffs Complex Construction.
A request for an annexation into Cedar City that would create an island of annexed land was denied. The commission's decision followed concerns raised by County Engineer Richard Wilson regarding unresolved legal, financial, and infrastructure issues between the city and the county, such as road maintenance and tax sharing. The county is currently conducting a Capital Facilities Plan Study expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The commission also discussed Project Juniper, an economic development opportunity located on approximately 830 acres in Iron County. The project aims to address market demand for power availability and industrial facility development, including data centers and advanced manufacturing.
Other approved items included the Utah Indigent Defense Grant #27D18 and a contract for the Public Defense Administrator, Public Defender, and Social Worker positions.
Departmental reports noted several upcoming and completed activities. Iron County Clerk Jonathan Whittaker reported that the General Election database would be mailed on October 13, with ballots scheduled to be mailed 21 days before the election. Emergency Management Manager George Colson reported on various fire responses and the expansion of the department's social media presence. Fleet Manager Wade Adams reported that the department has completed 752 work orders, including replacements for Council on Aging transit vans.
